Have you ever stumbled upon a place so captivating that it feels like it's been plucked straight from a dream? For me, that place is Tangle River in St. James, Jamaica. Join me on a journey as I recount my unforgettable experience exploring this hidden gem nestled within the lush landscapes of my island home.

I've explored many breath-taking places across my beautiful island of Jamaica, and Tangle River in St. James has left an indelible mark on my memory. During the writing process of my book, my friend Simone provided me with an extensive list of forgotten places in St. James.

Setting out on the Knutsford Express at five in the morning, I embarked on a journey to one of the parishes I had explored the least.

Although the ride was enjoyable, it felt slower than what I was accustomed to with our country coaster buses.

This place truly felt like heaven on earth, boasting bamboo camp sites, multiple waterfalls, cabins, and more. For a heavenly experience, one could reach out via Instagram or secure a booking through platforms like bookings.com and tikets.com.

However, Mr. Duncan informed me that there wasn't enough water flowing in the river at that time. With only five days in the parish of St. James, I decided to explore other places on my list.

Unfortunately, my luck didn't seem to improve, as I only encountered two waterfalls in the community of Lottery during my time in the parish. Some of the waterfalls were inaccessible, hidden behind houses.

Determined to experience Tangle River, I reached out to Mr. Duncan again and fortunately, the flow of the waterfall wasn't a hindrance. Boarding a Maroon Town mini-bus after missing the Tangle River one, I was mesmerized by the beauty of St. James as the bus traversed through its hills.

It was a unique experience for me, spending days exploring a single parish, as my adventures are typically same-day outings. Feeling safe and content in one of the island's most rural and historic areas, I savoured every moment.

Although the Maroon Town bus didn't head to Tangle River, Mr. Duncan arranged for the Tangle River driver to wait for me at a gas station. After bidding farewell to the Maroon Town community members, I continued my journey to Tangle River.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Mr. Duncan and immediately led to the first waterfall. The sight was breath-taking, prompting me to snap photos as if fearing the beauty would vanish before my eyes. It felt like discovering a waterfall for the very first time, reigniting my love for exploring hidden gems. The picturesque pool offered a perfect setting for photography, with Mr. Duncan proving to be an adept assistant behind the lens, quickly learning how to capture the essence of the waterfalls.

As we explored further, Mr. Duncan shared the rich history of Tangle River, adding depth to my experience.

Moving on to another mini waterfall, possibly with a cave, I marvelled at the natural beauty surrounding me.

Engrossed in conversation with Mr. Duncan, I eagerly absorbed the history of Tangle River, learning about its significance following the British troops' destruction of Nanny Town in the Blue Mountains.

Thanks to Simone's guidance, I had the opportunity to explore Tangle River, a place that wouldn't have existed in my experiences otherwise, given my tendency to explore the eastern side of the island.

With two more waterfalls to discover, I eagerly continued my exploration, soaking in the rich history and natural splendour of Tangle River. During a ten-minute walk, I learned about the rich history of the area.

After the British troop’s successful destruction of Nanny Town in the Blue Mountains, Cudjoe's Maroons decided to move on to the Tangle River area of St James.

In the elevated terrain of the St James section within the Cockpit Country, nestled at the conclusion of a lengthy, winding mountain path, lies a locality known as Flagstaff.

This area is a fragment of a larger region stretching to the northern reaches of St Elizabeth, formerly recognized as Trelawny Town.

In bygone eras, its inhabitants comprised solely of Maroons, who bravely resisted British colonization and subsequently were permitted to maintain their existence in that rugged terrain.

As the years unfolded, a myriad of individuals from varied backgrounds migrated to the area, fostering a diverse culture and populace. Some descendants and progeny gradually relocated from the vicinity, resulting in a gradual dilution of the Maroon culture.

This narrative echoes across numerous Maroon settlements in Jamaica. However, while locales like Accompong Town in St Elizabeth, Charles Town and Moore Town in Portland, and Scotts Hall in St Mary have garnered significant local and international attention, Maroon Town and Flagstaff in St James appear to have faded from the historical records of Maroon heritage.

The journey to the third waterfall provided valuable insights into the region's history, highlighting its Maroon heritage. As we ventured deeper into the heart of Tangle River, Mr. Duncan shared the rich history of the area, adding depth and meaning to my experience.

From tales of Maroon heritage to the resilience of communities nestled within the Cockpit Country, every story painted a vivid picture of Jamaica's past.

Arriving at the third waterfall, I fell in love instantly. It was a serene spot with a beautiful pool, and Mr. Duncan mentioned he had constructed a few bamboo rafts after my visit. Tangle River was capturing my heart.

Each waterfall seemed more enchanting than the last, with the fourth one becoming my favourite for its jungle ambiance and serene atmosphere.

The fourth waterfall became my favourite, exuding a jungle vibe with towering bamboo trees and a perfect, small cascade. It felt like paradise, and I found myself enamoured with Tangle River all over again.

As I reluctantly prepared to leave, I cherished the memories and conversations with Mr. Duncan about Jamaica's history. I shared my projects with him, including my book, YouTube channel, and blog, naturessweetescapes.com, which I've maintained for over six years. I vowed to return to the Tangle River Experience.

Mr. Duncan guided me to several waterfalls, each more stunning than the last. From taking photos to learning about the area's history, every moment was magical. Despite the initial setback with the river's water flow, Tangle River captivated my heart with its natural beauty.

As we delved deeper into the history of the region, I gained a newfound appreciation for its significance in Jamaica's past.

From its origins as a refuge for Maroon communities to its role in shaping the cultural landscape of the island, Tangle River's story is as captivating as its natural splendour.

With each waterfall we encountered, my love for Tangle River grew stronger. From the tranquil pools to the towering bamboo trees, every corner of this hidden oasis exuded a sense of tranquillity and charm that left an indelible mark on my soul.

Throughout my visit, Mr. Duncan's hospitality and passion for Tangle River were evident.

As we explored each waterfall, I couldn't help but fall deeper in love with the tranquillity and charm of this hidden gem. From the lush surroundings to the refreshing pools, every aspect of Tangle River was a delight to experience.

Despite my reluctance to leave, I eventually had to bid goodbye. While waiting for transportation back to Montego Bay, Mr. Duncan and I engaged in an enlightening conversation about Jamaica's history, my writing projects, and my passion for exploration.
