The goal of life is living in agreement with nature
Let me take you to my favorite parish, Portland. Its landscapes are a paradise of rivers, waterfalls, and untouched trails that always draw me back.
Recently, my friend Izzy and I set out on a new journey, revisiting some lesser-known gems in this lush region.
After an exhilarating visit to Cascade Waterfall and Fishdunn, we set our sights on Balcarres Waterfall.
I’d only been there once, years ago, so it felt like a long-awaited reunion.
Our journey to Balcarres was an adventure in itself. We climbed a slippery, moss-covered wall, a challenge that added a touch of thrill. Izzy led the way, helping me up when the wall became steeper than expected.
The upper part of the waterfall was less daunting, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty of Balcarres—a unique waterfall named after its community.
Balcarres has a fascinating, albeit controversial, history. Named after James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres, who served as Governor of Jamaica during the late 1700s, the area carries stories of the past.
Governor Balcarres' legacy is a mix of military history and, sadly, conflict with the Jamaican Maroons.
The resilience of the Maroons has become a powerful part of Jamaica’s history, and being in a place connected to that era feels significant.
After taking a few photos and soaking in the scenery, we decided to continue our journey. Our next stop: Marston Spring Waterfall.
We paused to grab lunch at Mama Fiyah Vegan Restaurant, a cozy spot serving Rice and Peas with Veggie Stew, Callaloo, and Cabbage mixed with Carrot.
It was exactly what we needed—a taste of local flavors and a moment to relax before setting off again.
It was a perfect meal to refuel for the rest of the day.
The ocean views from the restaurant were stunning, so naturally, we snapped a few photos.
Moments like these remind me of why I love Portland so much—the vibrant culture and breathtaking views are endless.
Our initial plan was to visit Marley or Somerset Waterfalls, but I knew Marston Spring would be a memorable experience for Izzy’s first time in Jamaica.
After a quick call to my friend Shane, who couldn’t do the Warsh Spring and Big River waterfall tour due to illness, I got in touch with Dario, my friend who was eager to take us to Marston Spring.
My friend and tourguide Dario, Mario, Izzy, and I—set off into the bush, ready to be immersed in nature.
The trail to Marston Spring is a true nature lover’s path, untouched and wild.
My friend Izzy was experience something truly unforgettable walking this beautiful trail.
The trail to Marston Spring brought back vivid memories. I recalled my first journey here, during the early days of my waterfall adventures.
Back then, I was following a lead from my friend Simone for a waterfall to include in my travel book.
It was an epic day that included asking strangers for directions, hopping on a bike, and crossing rivers in search of hidden beauty.
It's experiences like these that shaped my passion for exploring Jamaica’s hidden beauty.
On this journey, we crossed the Mabess River, climbed rocks, and finally found ourselves in front of Marston Spring.One of the loves of my life.
A deep pool surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of flowing water. We didn’t swim this time, but the moment was magical.
The water here was deep and clear, surrounded by an untouched landscape.
I took a few photos and let the beauty of Marston Spring wash over me, feeling grateful to be in the heart of nature.
On the way back, we relaxed at one of the many natural pools along the Mabess River. We enjoyed a few quiet moments before heading back to the world beyond the trees.
