A separate parish was being demanded by coffee farmers in the hill districts of Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and the parish of Vere on November 29, 1814, thus leading to a petitioned for this said demand. The reason behind having a new parish and capital were: to meet their religious, civic, judicial and administrative needs. But the real cause for this act was the huge detachment between the current hill districts, the commercial and administrative centres of the current parishes. A prime location for cattle farming in the parish is Mile Gully. The country’s largest livestock breeding research station is also located in Mile Gully.
