St. James emerged as one of Jamaica's second wave of parishes established, believed to have been named by Sir Thomas Modyford circa 1655, in honor of the Duke of York, who later ascended to the throne as James II. Originally encompassing a much larger area, it incorporated what are now Trelawny and Hanover parishes.
Traces of Jamaica's indigenous Taino people, known as the "Fairfield people," have been discovered along St. James' coastal regions, particularly near Montego Bay, where notable examples of their pottery have been unearthed.
