Where we love is home – home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.- Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
Introduction:
My first visit to Copper Hole in the picturesque Georgia district of St. Thomas, Jamaica, left me spellbound. It was a magical experience that left an indelible mark on my memory. I knew right then that I had to return. While my initial visit was during a dry spell, a subsequent trip with my friend Jessica, where we explored Grampa Waterfall, provided us with a renewed opportunity to visit Copper Hole. Little did we know that we were about to embark on an adventure that would reveal the true enchantment of this hidden gem. My YouTube channel will feature content showcasing enjoyable adventures in the St. Thomas.
The Initial Dry Spell:
It all began with an innate pull to return to Copper Hole after a mesmerizing first visit. Despite the island's prolonged lack of rain, my companion Jessica and I embarked on the trip after exploring Grampa Waterfall.
Undeterred, we ventured forward, aiming to map the path for a future return. We followed a narrow path that eventually led us to Copper Hole, hidden among the lush vegetation. We encountered a dry scene that Jessica described as "dry like crackers."
The Quest for Copper Hole's True Beauty:
While we were initially met with an empty hole where a beautiful pool of water should be, our determination to experience the true magic of Copper Hole led us to take some phone numbers from local community members.
We wanted to keep tabs on when Copper Hole would return to its magnificent state.
As weeks passed and the island experienced frequent rain showers, one call to a community member confirmed that Copper Hole was flowing beautifully once again.
The Journey to Copper Hole:
Excitement fueled our journey to Copper Hole, but first, we indulged in a delightful meal of Ackee and Saltfish with sweet potatoes, boiled dumplings, and bananas at the Palisados.
However, things took a turn when I started feeling unwell, which was likely due to setting off on an empty stomach. The car also encountered issues, forcing us to cancel the trip.
Detours and Surprises:
Returning to St. Thomas, Jessica opted for a shorter route and a pit stop to buy a variety of fresh fruits. We met a friendly TikToker known as Steam Boss, who shared insights about the road conditions. I met him on my trip to Richmond Vale Waterfall. We eventually decided to take the older route, hoping to reach Morant Bay more quickly.
Surprisingly, the road conditions were perfect, but we encountered no other travelers until we met a man on foot, which briefly seemed like an encounter with a ghost.
The Beauty of Georgia District:
Upon reaching the point where we couldn't continue due to the road's terrible condition, we met the man we had seen earlier.
He informed us that we needed a four-wheel drive to proceed further. After some persuasion, we decided to take the more popular route to Georgia district. With soca music playing in the car and cheerful singing, we finally arrived at our destination.
The condition of the roads in the Georgia District is terrible. Jessica had to drive very slowly before we finally reached our destination, which led to Copper Hole.
The Enchantment of Copper Hole:
As we ventured down the narrow track towards Copper Hole, the sound of rushing water signaled its presence.
Jessica caught her first glimpse of Copper Hole and I thought I was in a dream. Her amazement was a testament to the site's captivating beauty.
The water was stunningly clear and inviting. I instantly understood why a mermaid myth surrounded this location. We couldn't resist capturing the moment with photos and videos, completely awestruck by the beauty surrounding us.
Exploring Copper Hole:
We ventured to the top of the beautiful pool, thinking it was Copper Hole itself. To my surprise, there was a large waterfall that resembled a copper pot used in Jamaican cuisine.
Jessica took a swim, while I contented myself with dipping my foot into the water.
We documented our unforgettable experience and even had some tea and tuna with crackers at a magical spot.
The Mystique of Copper Hole:
I first heard about Copper Hole through an interview with a local newspaper. However, I recently learned that the mini-pool I initially saw was not Copper Hole itself.
It was a beautiful pool with a mini waterfall where the actual Copper Waterfall flows into.
The name originates from a waterfall that resembles a copper pot used in traditional Jamaican cooking. The area felt like a portal to another world, with two rivers, Copper River (also known as Dry River) and Janga (Crayfish) spring.
The Search for Mermaids:
Jessica and I had embarked on our journey with a belief in the existence of mermaids in the area.
While we didn't encounter any physical beings, we discovered that the community held a strong belief in the existence of these mystical creatures, both spiritual and mysterious.
Leaving Copper Hole:
Reluctantly, we had to leave this enchanting place but couldn't stop talking about its beauty.
St. Thomas, known as the most beautiful parish in Jamaica, lived up to its reputation, surpassing even our beloved Portland.
Our journey was a captivating experience filled with awe and wonder, and we promised ourselves we would return to Copper Hole in the future.
